Spit Up, Revelation 3:14-22
Notes
- Read Revelation 3:14-22. Pastor Pete said that Ephesus had "Christology, but no Geography," meaning that they knew the right doctrines and tried to stay pure, but didn't take it to the world; and that Laodicea had "Geography without Christology," meaning they went out into the world without having first been transformed by the power of Christ, making them ineffective. Which danger are we more prone to: strong theology without outward engagement, or cultural engagement without deep transformation?
- The water imagery in vv. 15-16 show that the church of Laodicea was neither hot (used in healing) nor cold (used to refresh). What is nauseating about a lukewarm faith and when have you found yourself in that state?
- Laodicea said "I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing" (v. 17). Where might comfort or success blind us to our spiritual poverty and what practices can remind you of that deep need for Christ?
- Jesus tells them to buy the kind of gold from him that is refined by fire, the kind that that can take the heat and still be valuable (v. 18). What trials in your life have exposed or purified your faith?
- What does it look like for God to reprove and discipline those he loves (v. 19)? How does this compare to the judgment he has for those who ultimately reject him?
- Calvin Miller said, "Once you've dined with Jesus, you pass by lesser meals." Where have you seen your daily time with Jesus impact your witness in the world? And what deeper level of intimacy is he calling you into now?
