Transition and Tension, Revelation 4:1-2
Notes
- Read Revelation 4:1-11. Pastor Pete compared the Artemis II crew looking down on the earth with John's perspective shifting in chapter 4, saying that this section takes us off the "ground level" with all the chaos and gives us the big picture of Jesus in control on the throne. Where in your life do you feel "on the ground" in your perspective (overwhelmed, pressured, anxious), and how could lifting your eyes to where God is seated impact your perspective?
- John's vision isn't an escape from reality, but a glimpse behind the scenes. How does knowing that God is actively ruling (rather than just observing) reshape the way you think about your own difficult or confusing circumstances?
- What questions or emotions come up when you hear that even evil operates under God's authority?
- The biblical tension between God's sovereignty and human responsibility is one we have to hold in our lives so that we don't fall into either panic or passivity. Are you more prone to panic (fear and anxiety) because it feels like everything depends on you, or towards passivity because it seems like everything is inevitable and nothing you do matters?
- If God has already secured the outcome, why does Scripture still warn us and call us to conquer and endure? How would you explain the relationship between God preserving us and our own persevering?
- God is fully sovereign and also calls us into real, meaningful participation with him. What would it look like for you practically this week to live in that tension where you are trusting God completely while also actively obeying him? Give real examples related to what is coming up for you this week.
