The Corrupting Minority, Revelation 2:12-17
Notes
- Read Revelation 2:12-17. Jesus tells the church in Pergamum that he knows that they live "where Satan's throne is" (v. 13), but he commends them for holding fast to his name. What are some ways you've experienced what it means to follow Jesus in a place where evil or pressure against your faith is strong?
- Pergamum is praised for their faithfulness, but rebuked for tolerating false teaching. What negative influences are you allowing in and tolerating in your life that you shouldn't? In other words, what kinds of things could potentially warp your mind and deceive you?
- Jesus rebuked the church for holding to the teachings of Balaam who played a part in leading God's people toward idolatry and moral compromise. What are some forms of compromise that believers may be tempted to accept in order to avoid difficulty or fit in with culture? Where are you tempted to cut corners or go with the flow? 4/ These letters to the churches address the whole church as well as individuals within it, and every person who attends a church impacts that church's culture in some way. How do you think your attitude, actions, or faith are influencing others at Hillside, for better or worse?
- Hebrews 4 says that nothing is hidden from God's sight. Why do you think its both comforting and challenging to know that Jesus sees our hearts completely?
- Pastor Pete described repentance as opening yourself honestly to God and turning toward him with a heaviness over sin. How is biblical repentance deeper than simply feeling guilty or trying to behave better?
